About Hossegor
Hossegor, just north of Biarritz on
the Cote d'Argent, is a delightful resort with much to offer in return for
the longer drive south.
The Cote d'Argent, stretching from the
River Garonne south of Royan to Biarritz boasts the longest, straightest,
sandiest beach in Europe. Facing the dark blue of Biscay and backed
everywhere by the dark green of the pines, this strip of light golden sand,
almost white in the blazing sun offers a unique sense of space and freedom.

Hossegor is separated from
neighbouring Cap Breton by the Bourret Canal. It has a large tidal lake with
sandy beaches, a canal, two rivers, the ocean beaches and the forest with
the backdrop of the Pyrenees in sight from any small elevation and the
beach.
This is one of the best places on the
Cote d'Argent for swimming. Just off the coast there is a deep trench in the
ocean bed, ten times as deep as the sea either side of it. This valley,
parallel with the shore and formed at the same time as the mountain chain of
the Pyrennes, has the effect of calming the sea so that the waves reaching
the beach at Hossegor are reduced in size. Bathers have the choice of a
stimulating dip in the sea or a swim in the warmer and shallower waters of
the tidal lake. Recently many kilometers of cycle track have been developed
around the town and through the pine forests, making cycling a pleasure for
all the family.
At the turn of the century, the
present site of Hossegor was deserted. It was not until a small colony of
writers and artists from Biarritz settled there in 1900 that a community
began to grow up there, the charm of it's situation making it steadily more
popular. Today the 2.5km long lake is especially popular with dinghy sailors
and windsurfers. There are plenty of other facilities for other outdoor
activities including an established 18 hole golf course.
Hossegor is a lively place with it's
Sporting Casino (cinema, casino, nightclub), for it's traditional
entertainment of Courses Landaises and Pelote Basque, and for it's varied
shopping and many restaurants.
Interesting outings are to Dax (the
most important spa in France after Aix-les-Bains, famous for it's mud
baths), Bayonne (capital of Basque region, a crowded, lively and prosperous
city), Biarritz (set in a coastline of almost orchestrated beauty, once
again very much in fashion in a more discreet way with the super-rich and
famous), and a choice of many possible trips into the Pyrenees for walking,
mountain biking, canoeing and white water rafting.
